University results are usually reported as a GPA (for one semester) and a CGPA (across all semesters) on a 4.0 scale. Both use the same idea: grade points weighted by credit hours.
Step 1: Know your grade points
Each letter grade has a grade point, for example A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0. Many universities also use plus/minus grades such as A− = 3.67 or B+ = 3.33. Check your university’s exact table.
Step 2: Calculate semester GPA
GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours
- Calculus (3 credits) – A (4.0) → 12.0
- Programming (4 credits) – B+ (3.33) → 13.32
- English (2 credits) – A− (3.67) → 7.34
Total = 32.66 ÷ 9 credits = GPA 3.63
Step 3: Calculate CGPA
CGPA = Σ(semester GPA × semester credits) ÷ total credits. A simple average of GPAs is only correct if every semester has the same credits.
Use the calculators
- GPA Calculator – add courses, credits and grades.
- CGPA Calculator – add each semester’s GPA and credits.
- GPA to Percentage – for forms that ask for a percentage.
Planning for a target CGPA
Add a future semester in the CGPA calculator and try different GPAs. Because CGPA is weighted by credits, raising it gets harder in later semesters, so strong early semesters matter.
Conclusion
Weight grade points by credit hours, add them up and divide by total credits. With the calculators you can check your transcript and plan your next semester in minutes.
